− | ==Notes about "Standards and Practices"== |
||
− | "Standards and Practices" is a television industry term for the "self-censorship bureau" of each TV network, usually abbreviated S&P. Their job is to review, edit and approve all shows that air on the network so nothing slips through that might cause people to get offended and complain to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ("Oops! Somebody's getting an email!") who then fines the network thousands of dollars for showing "obscene matter" on public TV. Cartoon Network's S&P division is who adds the "bleeps" over curse words on ATHF and demands changes in material they think is too edgy before the show airs. |
||
− | |||
− | Since Adult Swim rents their airtime from (and is owned by) Cartoon Network, they were forced to get all their shows pre-approved by Cartoon Network's S&P Division, which has a very puritanical attitude (considering how, other than Adult Swim, they only show TV-G childrens' programs like Bugs Bunny cartoons and Disney movies) and was known for being a total bunch of dicks about what was allowed to be shown on "their" network, even after 10pm. In addition, Cartoon Network is owned by Ted Turner, who is a notorious Tipper Gore-style leftist hypocrite about "decency on TV", in particular refusing to allow the word "Jesus" to be spoken on any of his networks. This is the source of the joke about being forced to say "Gee Whiz" instead of "Jesus" so Cartoon Network S&P doesn't get mad. |
||
− | |||
− | In early 2004 Adult Swim was actually successful at petitioning the FCC to count them as a separate TV network for S&P purposes, which is why ATHF was able to air this show at all, as well as the Season 4 episode Ezekial in which Shake's ancestor is prominently dubbed Jesus "Ezekiel" Jesus, which was done intentionally. They unfortunately are still owned by Turner Networks and count as a subdivision of Cartoon Network despite not having to answer to their S&P department, which is why the original Season 5 premier Boston was never shown (and never will be shown), which mocks Cartoon Network's response to the Boston Mooninite Scare. Turner Networks' legal department has apparently promised to cancel Aqua Teen Hunger Force and sue Adult Swim if they air it, since it reportedly mocks the network's response to the incident and could potentially rekindle the city of Boston's lawsuit against Cartoon Network, who had already voluntarily paid $3 million in "good faith money" to the city of Boston and the Department of Homeland Defense as well as forcing the network's manager, Jim Samples, to resign to placate Massachusetts District Attorney Martha Coakley, who had called the incident "a coordinated terrorist hoax" and was promising to prosecute him. Willis and Maellaro remain extremely tight lipped on the topic. |

"Gee Whiz" is the fourth episode of the third season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and the 46th episode overall. It originally aired August 22nd, 2004.
Plot
Spacecataz: The Mooninites knock on the Plutonians door then run away.
The episode begins with Meatwad harassing Frylock to try and make pizza appear out of the computer. Frylock is more interested in a news story concerning people seeing the image of a certain religious figure that he can't say the name of because of "Standards and Practices." He shows Meatwad a brief video on the subject, which becomes a running gag through the remainder of the episode, then raises his doubts as to the actuality of the image which is referred to as "Gee Whiz".
Meatwad, in the meantime, rolls over to a billboard for a gun store that includes said image (which Frylock claims not to be able to see) and prays for pizza, offering money to make the prayer come true. Frylock catches him and takes him home. Master Shake, who has been hiding the whole time, tries to take Meatwad's money but has flaming arrows shoot at him.
Back at the Aqua Teens' home Meatwad learns he is pregnant, to the anger of Shake and the amazement of Frylock, who head over to the billboard where Shake tries to make Frylock see the image. Again, Frylock can't see it and Shake has flaming arrows shoot at him when he takes Gee Whiz's name in vain.
After a baby shower for Meatwad Frylock decides to try and make a sonogram of the baby, revealing the horrible truth—Meatwad's "pregnancy" is in fact a colony of spiders that have entered his body and grown. Meatwad's stomach explodes shortly thereafter and Frylock and Shake flee the house while it fills with spiders.
Once outside the two, as well as Carl, run into Ted Nugent. Nugent shoots Carl with a flaming arrow, warning him not to move, and tells Shake and Frylock that it was his image they had seen on the billboard. Carl's body explodes and (revisiting a joke from earlier in the episode) a rainbow shoots out. Frylock and Shake are happy, yet curse out S&P to end the episode.
